About the Studio

Most designers will hand you a mood board.

I'll hand you a budget, a timeline, a vendor plan, and a 3D model of exactly what we're building — and then I'll manage the whole thing until it's done.

Our Approach

What Aesthetic Functionality Does Differently

Most residential designers are trained in aesthetics. That's valuable — but it's only part of what a renovation actually requires.

A remodel is a project. It has a budget that needs to be tracked, contractors who need to be coordinated, decisions that need to be made on a timeline, and a client who deserves to know what's happening at every stage.

That's what I was trained to do — at scale, under pressure, with real financial accountability.

At Aesthetic Functionality, every project starts with a budget framework, not a mood board. Every vendor is coordinated, not just recommended. Every decision is documented. And every client knows exactly where their project stands.

Beautiful spaces. Managed like a business.

Leadership

I'm Michelle Roche, founder of Aesthetic Functionality.

Before I was a designer, I was an operations director. For 15 years I managed large, complex organizations — directing facilities at Bergen Community College with an $8 million operating budget and $28 million in capital planning, overseeing $5 million in construction and vendor contracts at Erickson Senior Living, and leading multi-site operations at Kendal-Crosslands Communities across four communities and 2,000 residents.

I also hold an MBA from Ramapo College of New Jersey, a Certificate in Project Management, and a background in residential real estate — I've sold homes, which means I understand exactly what buyers look for and which renovations actually move the needle on value.

I founded Aesthetic Functionality because I kept watching homeowners get beautiful designs delivered with no budget discipline, no contractor coordination, and no plan for what happens when something goes wrong. I've spent my entire career making sure things don't go wrong. Now I do that for your home.

I am independent by design. Aesthetic Functionality is not a large firm and it is not meant to be. I work with a focused number of clients at a time so that every project gets real attention — not a junior team member and a template.

I collaborate with licensed architects and structural engineers when projects require it. I coordinate with contractors selected by the homeowner or sourced through my professional network. My role is to be the planning authority — the person who holds the whole picture together while the specialists do their work.

I know what I do and I know what I don't do. That clarity is what makes the process work.

Aesthetic Functionality serves homeowners in Delaware, New Jersey, and surrounding areas. In-person planning consultations are available. Remote planning services are also offered for clients outside the immediate area.

Philosophy

Your Remodel Deserves a Real Plan.

If you're preparing for a renovation and you want someone who will manage the process — not just design the outcome — let's talk. Schedule a planning consultation and let's figure out what your project actually needs.
